What started as a $99 flight or a $100-per-night hotel stay can quickly balloon thanks to a long list of hidden fees. These stealth charges are rarely advertised upfront and often catch travelers off guard, turning affordable vacations into financial stressors.

From baggage fees and hotel surcharges to rental car add-ons and mystery taxes, the travel industry is full of subtle ways to extract more money from your wallet. And while each individual fee might seem insignificant, they stack up fast, especially on longer trips or for families traveling together. The good news? With a bit of insider knowledge, you can spot these fees before they hit your credit card and take control of your travel budget.

Hidden Travel Fees And How to Avoid Them

1. Airline Seat Selection Fees

Booking your flight used to be simple. You picked a ticket, got a seat, and flew. Today, many airlines charge you to choose your seat in advance, even if it’s just a standard option without extra legroom. If you’re traveling as a couple or with kids, the fees multiply quickly, especially if you want to sit together. Some budget carriers have made this the norm, even charging to avoid the dreaded middle seat.

These fees are often hidden until the end of the booking process, by which time you’ve already mentally committed to the purchase. Opting out may leave you with a random seat assignment that separates you from your group. In some cases, paying for seat selection doesn’t even guarantee a better experience—just peace of mind. To save money, consider skipping this upcharge and letting the airline assign seats at check-in, particularly for short flights. It’s a small sacrifice that can yield big savings.

2. Resort Fees at Hotels

You may think you’ve found a bargain hotel room online, but if it’s labeled a “resort,” you’re likely in for a surprise. Resort fees are mandatory daily charges that cover amenities like Wi-Fi, pool access, gym usage, and sometimes even in-room coffee. They often aren’t included in the base rate shown during booking and only appear when you’re ready to pay—or worse, at check-in.

This fee can add $20 to $50 per night to your total, which adds up fast on longer stays. The worst part? You usually have to pay it whether or not you use the amenities. These fees are especially common in tourist hotspots like Las Vegas, Orlando, and Hawaii. To avoid being blindsided, always read the fine print and look for hotels that are upfront about fees—or better yet, proudly advertise “no resort fees.”

3. Airline Baggage Fees

Gone are the days when your checked bag flew for free. Many airlines now charge for both carry-on and checked luggage, especially on basic economy fares or budget carriers. These fees vary depending on the airline, destination, and even the timing of your booking. And if your bag is overweight or oversized, expect to pay a steep penalty—sometimes more than the cost of the ticket itself.

These charges are not always obvious at the time of booking and can sneak up on travelers at the airport. This is particularly frustrating for families or longer trips when packing light isn’t an option. To avoid surprises, check the baggage policy for your specific ticket class and airline before you purchase. Some premium credit cards offer baggage fee reimbursements, and flying with higher-tier fare classes can also eliminate or reduce these charges.

4. Rental Car Insurance “Add-ons”

You find a rental car for $25 a day and feel like you’ve hit the jackpot…until you get to the counter. That’s where you’re bombarded with insurance upsells: collision damage waivers, liability protection, theft coverage, and more. The agent might even suggest that your personal car insurance won’t cover you, hoping to push you into panic-buying extra policies.

In many cases, your regular auto insurance or credit card already covers rental cars. But under pressure, many travelers agree to the added coverage just to be safe. These insurance add-ons can double or triple the total cost of your rental. To protect your wallet, research your coverage before traveling and bring proof if needed. Knowing your rights at the rental desk gives you the confidence to say “no” to unnecessary charges.

5. Foreign Transaction Fees

While traveling internationally, every time you swipe your credit card, you could be incurring foreign transaction fees, usually around 1% to 3%. This fee is charged by your bank or card issuer and applied automatically with each purchase made in a foreign currency. That small percentage might not seem like much at first, but on a long trip or big purchase, it adds up fast.

Worse, many travelers don’t realize they’re being charged until they review their credit card statement back home. These hidden costs can quietly eat into your travel funds and diminish your spending power abroad. Luckily, several credit cards now offer no foreign transaction fees and are ideal for frequent international travelers. If you’re going abroad, choose your payment methods carefully and always read your card’s fine print.

6. Hotel Parking Fees

Hotel parking fees are often a hidden line item that only appears at check-in. Whether you’re in a big city, beach town, or resort area, many hotels charge $20 to $50 per night just to park your vehicle. Valet-only options often cost even more and don’t forget to tip.

If you’re traveling by car, this can quickly become a major added cost, especially if your trip includes multiple nights. Some hotels even charge for self-parking despite having an open lot. To avoid sticker shock, search for accommodations that include free parking or at least disclose rates upfront. In urban areas, consider using nearby public parking garages, which may offer better daily or hourly rates.

7. Wi-Fi Charges

It’s 2025, yet some hotels, particularly luxury properties, still charge for Wi-Fi. Even if you’re paying hundreds for your room, internet access may come with a daily fee of $10 to $30. And if you have multiple devices, some properties charge per device, compounding the cost.

This charge feels especially outdated, given how essential internet access is for communication, navigation, and planning during travel. Airlines are also guilty of this, offering spotty, overpriced in-flight Wi-Fi on longer routes. To avoid this fee, check hotel amenities before booking or join hotel loyalty programs, which often include free internet as a perk. Alternatively, travel with a mobile hotspot for consistent and secure access.

8. Airline Change and Cancellation Fees

Life happens. But if your travel plans shift unexpectedly, some airlines will make you pay dearly for it. Change and cancellation fees can range from $75 to $300 depending on the fare class, route, and airline policy. Basic economy tickets usually offer no flexibility at all. If you cancel, you lose your money.

While many major U.S. carriers have relaxed change fees on domestic routes, international and low-cost carriers still impose stiff penalties. These fees can be even more frustrating when flight changes are out of your control, like illness or weather-related delays. Always read fare conditions before booking, and consider travel insurance if your plans are uncertain. Flexibility often costs more upfront but saves you significantly if things go sideways.

9. Currency Exchange Fees at Airports

Exchanging money at the airport or hotel is a classic travel mistake. While these kiosks may advertise “no commission,” the catch lies in the exchange rate, which is often far worse than the official market rate. This hidden fee can quietly strip away a significant percentage of your cash.

If you exchange large sums at these locations, the losses multiply. In contrast, using your debit card at a local ATM usually gives you a much better rate, even after fees. Just be sure your card is authorized for international use and watch for ATM withdrawal fees. For best results, plan ahead and exchange a small amount at your bank before departure, then use in-country ATMs for the rest.

10. “Convenience” Fees on Booking Platforms

Third-party booking sites often lure you in with low base rates, only to tack on “convenience” or “processing” fees at the last step. These fees are sometimes disguised under ambiguous names like “service charge” or “booking protection,” giving the illusion that you’re getting something extra.

In reality, these fees are often unnecessary and inflate the price beyond what you’d pay by booking directly. Additionally, bookings through third parties can be harder to modify or cancel, with customer service often being unreliable. Before clicking confirm, compare final prices, including all fees, across several platforms. Direct booking may not only save you money, but also give you better flexibility and support.
