MLK Day will be celebrated on January 20, 2025. Martin Luther King Jr. was a champion of The Civil Rights Movement and nonviolent activism. President Ronald Reagan signed the observance of the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first celebrated three years later on January 20, 1986. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a Federal Holiday and is celebrated on the third Monday of January. Often, the holiday is celebrated as a national day of service.

On MLK Day, most people have the day off from work, so you may be wondering what stores are open. Maybe you’re still working on holiday returns or you have a gift card that is burning a hole in your pocket. Most retailers are open on MLK Day and often run big sales for the holiday. Stores in a high-traffic area such as a big city may be open later, while stores in smaller towns may close earlier. If your local store is open 24 hours, these hours will be different as well.
