The 4th of July – also referred to as Independence Day – is a federal holiday. Many people get to enjoy a day off work, allowing them to participate in local festivities or spend time with loved ones. But many people also want to take advantage of holidays and run errands. If you’re wondering, “Is the post office closed on the 4th of July 2024?” here’s what you need to know.

Is the Post Office Closed on the 4th of July, 2024?

Yes, the post office is closed on the 4th of July. The United States Postal Service (USPS) is a government agency. As a result, it follows the federal holiday schedule, so it closes for Independence Day.

On the 4th of July, there are no mail pickups or deliveries. Additionally, there aren’t any employees available for counter service, though postage kiosks and mailboxes in unsecured parts of the building are typically available.

Any mail dropped off in drop boxes won’t get processed on the 4th of July. Instead, it will be handled the following business day, which is Friday, July 5, 2024.

Post Office Regular Business Hours

Post offices typically use similar operating schedules. Typically, locations open between 8:00 am and 9:00 am, Monday through Friday. Additionally, the locations usually close in the 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm range. However, some post offices may have different schedules, so it’s wise to check with your nearest location to confirm when they’re seeing customers.

The availability of Saturday services varies from one location to the next. Some may open for limited hours – opening between 8:00 am and 10:00 am and closing at some point near 2:00 pm or 3:00 pm – while others won’t open at all on Saturday. As a result, you’ll need to check with your local post office in advance if you prefer to handle any shipping or pickups on Saturdays.

USPS 2024 Holiday Schedule

Since the USPS holiday schedule generally aligns with the federal holiday calendar, it’s easy to anticipate when the post office will close. Here’s an overview of the USPS 2024 holiday schedule:

  • New Year’s Day – Monday, January 1
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Monday, January 15
  • President’s Day – Monday, February 19

  • Veterans Day – Monday, November 11
  • Thanksgiving – Thursday, November 28
  • Christmas Day – Wednesday, December 25
