Many people trade stocks on a regular basis, largely thanks to the accessibility of mobile apps and web services. Since tools for trading are so readily available, people may think that they can buy or sell stocks at any time. However, that isn’t necessarily the case, as holidays can mean that the stock market is closed. Since November 28, 2024, is Thanksgiving, you may be wondering, “Is the stock market open on Thanksgiving 2024?”
If so, here’s what you should know.
Is the Stock Market Open on Thanksgiving 2024?
No, the US stock market isn’t open on Thanksgiving.
According to their official websites, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and tech heavy NASDAQ – which use the same holiday schedule – both close on Thanksgiving. So, there won’t be any trading activity on Thanksgiving Day. As a result, any trade that can only go through during active trading hours won’t be completed until the stock market reopens on Black Friday.
However, international stock exchanges are typically open. Those exchanges are in other countries, and since this Thanksgiving holiday isn’t an internationally recognized one, it won’t impact the operation of foreign stock exchanges.
Additionally, traders can place orders on Thanksgiving Day. The trades just won’t execute until the market opens on Friday.
Is the Bond Market Open on Thanksgiving 2024?
In 2024, the Bond market will be open on Thanksgiving Day, but will be closing early.
While the bond market doesn’t usually have a different holiday schedule from the stock market, Thanksgiving is one of those holidays where the hours are non-standard.
Usually, the bond market entities align their holiday schedule with recommendations made by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA). While they aren’t required to follow the guidelines set up by SIFMA, most do, and since SIFMA recommends closing at 2:00 PM on Thanksgiving Day, 2024, the bond market will be closing at 2:00 PM on Thanksgiving.
Stock Market 2024 Holiday Schedule
As discussed above, both the NYSE and NASDAQ use the same holiday schedule. While it’s highly similar to the federal holiday schedule, there are a couple of key differences.
Here’s an overview of the stock market 2024 holiday schedule:
- New Year’s Day (Observed) – Monday, January 1

There are also a few early closures during the year. Typically, those occur on the day before Independence Day and the Friday following Thanksgiving.
