Is The Stock Market Open on the 4th of July 2024?

Fourth of July is one of the major bank holidays in the United States. Also known as Independence Day, of course, this summer holiday celebrates the country’s freedom from Great Britain all those years ago. Since it’s a bank holiday, you may find yourself asking, “Is The Stock Market Open on the 4th of July 2024?” And when you realize that the day falls on a Tuesday this year, you might also wonder what that means for the Monday of this long holiday as it applies to the stock market.

When Is the 4th of July 2024 Celebrated?

Independence Day is celebrated annually on July 4th in the United States. However, that doesn’t mean that we always honor it on that same day in terms of when the stock market is open. Banks and other businesses that close for major holidays usually do so on weekdays. Therefore, if the 4th of July falls on a weekend then we recognize it with closures on either the Friday before or the Monday after.

In 2024, July 4th falls on a Tuesday. This provides a long weekend for individuals to celebrate the holiday. Many businesses will allow their employees to take time off of work on both Monday and Tuesday, returning on July 5th, 2024. However, is that the same for the stock market?

Is the Stock Market Open or Closed on July 4th, 2024?

The stock market in the United States typically follows a specific schedule, which you may be aware of. That schedule changes, however, with certain holidays. National holidays, also known as bank holidays, trigger closures of the stock market, banks, and other financial institutions.

So, if you’re asking if the stock market is open on July 4, 2024, the answer is an easy no. The stock market, including the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ, will be closed on Independence Day, July 4th, 2024. Therefore, investors and traders will not be able to participate in regular trading activities on this day.

Okay, But Is the Stock Market Closed on Wednesday, July 3rd, 2024?

While the stock market is closed on July 4th, the question remains whether the market will also be closed on Wednesday, July 3rd, 2024. Normally, the stock market closes just for the specific day of the holiday. The exception is when the holiday falls on a weekend, as aforementioned. But Tuesday is kind of weird because it creates that long weekend for most people. So, is the stock market also closed on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, this year?

We checked the NYSE holiday closures list to confirm. Indeed, the stock market will be open on Wednesday, July 3, BUT will close early.

From the NYSE official website:

“Each market will close early at 1:00 p.m. (1:15 p.m. for eligible options) on Wednesday, July 3, 2024. Crossing Session orders will be accepted beginning at 1:00 p.m. for continuous executions until 1:30 p.m. on these dates, and NYSE American Equities, NYSE Arca Equities, NYSE Chicago, and NYSE National late trading sessions will close at 5:00 pm. All times are Eastern Time.”

When Will Normal Stock Market Hours Resume?

Investors and traders need to stay informed about the stock market schedule, including closures for holidays, to effectively plan their investment strategies and manage their portfolios. Therefore, you might want to know when the stock market re-opens following Independence Day.

After the closure for the 4th of July holiday, the stock market will resume its normal trading hours. In 2024, since the 4th of July falls on a Tuesday, normal market operations will resume on the next business day, which is Friday, July 5th, 2024.

Why Does The Stock Market Close For Major Holidays?

Have you ever wondered why the stock market isn’t just open all of the time? Why does it close for major bank holidays like the 4th of July? Well, there are several reasons. For example:

Honoring the Holiday

National holidays like this hold cultural, historical, or patriotic significance. Closing the stock market on these days allows market participants, including investors, traders, and market employees, to have the opportunity to commemorate and enjoy these holidays with their families and friends.

Market Stability

Closing the stock market on national holidays helps maintain market stability. Holidays often result in reduced trading volumes and participation, as many investors and traders take time off or are engaged in holiday-related activities. Reduced trading activity can lead to lower liquidity and increased volatility, potentially creating an unfavorable trading environment. By closing the market, potential disruptions and adverse market conditions can be minimized.

Technology and Operational Maintenance

Market closures on national holidays also provide an opportunity for technology and operational maintenance. It allows market operators to perform essential system upgrades, infrastructure maintenance, and other operational tasks without interrupting regular trading activities.

Regulatory Compliance

Closing the stock market on national holidays ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. Regulatory bodies, such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), may have specific rules and regulations regarding market closures on holidays to ensure fair and orderly trading.

Clearing and Settlement Process

The closure of the stock market on national holidays allows time for the clearing and settlement process to take place smoothly. Clearinghouses and custodial institutions require time to process and settle trades, reconcile accounts, and handle other administrative tasks. Closing the market on holidays provides additional time for these essential processes.

Employee Wellbeing

Stock exchanges have a significant number of employees who work behind the scenes to ensure the smooth operation of the market. Closing the market on holidays like Independence Day gives these employees a well-deserved break, promoting their well-being and work-life balance. It also allows the market operators to adequately manage staffing and resource allocation, considering the reduced trading activity during holiday periods.
