One Thing to Be Scrooge About This Christmas

Christmas is the season of giving, but that doesn’t have to mean giving more of your money to your insurance company. Yes, we’re going to talk about insurance at Christmas because nothing fills the heart with good cheer like thoughts of dying, crashing your car, your house catching on fire, or getting hit in the face with an iron. (Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal.)

Okay, so we’re not actually saying to be Scrooge in all ways, but seriously, don’t give away money to the insurance company just because it’s Christmas! Taking a few minutes out of your busy holiday schedule to review your home and auto insurance could save you hundreds of dollars next year. And if your wallet is feeling a little light after Black Friday and months of inflation (we feel you), that would be great, wouldn’t it? An insurance review could put money in your pocket without you having to spend a dime!

Do You Know What We Know?

This probably isn’t the first time you’ve heard us talk about how much an insurance review can save you, but maybe you never followed through to find out for yourself. Well, there’s no better time than the holidays to save some cash (and we didn’t hear it from a shepherd boy, but he knows about it and is checking his insurance right now).

If you work with an independent insurance agent, it’s like having a personal shopper. They’ll take the hassle out of checking rates and help you find extra savings. Checking your insurance could be faster and easier than figuring out what gift to buy for your office Secret Santa!

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas with all the lights and decorations and insurance rate hikes wrapped up in renewal notices.

If you were hoping for a Christmas card but instead got a premium increase, don’t be afraid to go shop for a better homeowners insurance or auto insurance policy! In fact, some insurance companies (just like cable companies) are counting on you to not shop for a different plan. (And while we’re on the topic of saving on insurance, check out these 11 ways to pay less on auto insurance.) So ruin those Grinch-y insurance companies’ plans and call up an independent agent. You could eat a Christmas cookie while you do it.

Independent agents can save you money because they aren’t tied to one insurance company. They can offer you the best options from several companies, and they’ll help you avoid hidden insurance costs you might not be aware of.

Island of Misfit Policies

This is also the time of year when we reflect on the progress we’ve made over the last 12 months. Maybe you’re in a new financial situation. Maybe you’re working your way through the Baby Steps and you have enough in savings to afford a higher deductible. Whatever the case, your old policy just might not fit anymore.

Other life changes that call for an insurance evaluation include:

  • Marriage or new babies
  • Home or car purchase
  • New job or increased income
  • Retirement
  • Turning into Santa Claus (just kidding!)

If you’ve seen any of these life changes (except the last one), work with your insurance agent to see if you can update your policy and save some green. You might also think about bundling, which could save you money.

The Gift That Keeps on Giving
