Are you planning your next adventure? You don’t have to go into debt to explore. With the right mindset and a few travel hacks, you’ll be on your way to planning an affordable and enjoyable trip. Learn how to travel on a budget with these nine easy tips.

1. Save on Lodging

A great way to explore on a budget is to travel to areas where you have friends or relatives. This will help you cut down on lodging costs entirely. If this isn’t an option, you can also check out booking a room in an Airbnb, staying at a hostel, or booking a last-minute hotel deal on sites like Hotel Tonight or Travelocity.

2. Consider a Cruise

The best part about seeing the world on a cruise is that most of your expenses are included upfront. Plus, if you choose an interior room you can usually get a great deal. The most important part about booking a cruise is knowing when to book and choosing the best season for your trip. Costs can vary drastically based on season, vessel, and destination.

3. Use Budget Airlines

Choosing a budget airline with unbundled fares can save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars. If you can travel light and not pay for a checked bag or carry-on, unbundled pricing can work in your favor. Most budget airlines like Spirit will allow you one free personal item like a backpack. Plan on doing laundry on your trip so you can bring as little as possible. Also, don’t fall for seat upgrades, expensive in-flight snacks, wi-fi, or other upgrades. Most of it is overpriced.

4. Eat Reasonably

To travel on a budget, you have to manage how much you spend on food. Popular tourist spots are not the best place to eat if you’re trying to stay on budget. Instead, find out where the locals eat, visit markets, and cook at home. Having a kitchen wherever you stay will help save you money.

5. Choose Free Entertainment

There are so many options for free entertainment when you travel. Many museums have free days that you can take advantage of. There are also a plethora of low-cost walking tours in almost every city. Visit sites like Viator and Groupon to find the best deals for your next adventure. You can also bring some entertainment with you like a good book and a deck of cards for when you have downtime.

6. Split Costs with a Group

Travelling with a group can not only be more fun but can save everyone money. If you travel with a group, you can split expenses like accommodations, food, and transportation. You can even find group discounts on activities to save even more money.

7. Use Travel Cards

Travel cards are one of the best ways to travel on a budget. With points toward flights, hotels, or other rewards, you can make your trip more affordable. Many travel cards offer sign-up bonuses and travel discounts as well. Choose the right card for you and avoid annual fees for the most savings.

8. Get Around Affordably

Travelling to multiple destinations or even within one city can get expensive. The most cost-effective way to explore a city or town on a budget is to use public transit. If you decide to visit multiple places in one trip, consider all the different modes of transportation available to find the best deal. Sites like Rome2Rio can help you plan the most affordable transportation from one place to the next. This includes by bus, train, car, or plane. Especially if you are travelling abroad, the European railway system is an efficient way to travel.

9. Be Flexible

If you have some flexibility on the dates you’re looking to travel and where you’d like to go, you can more easily plan around the best deals on flights and lodging. Even when you arrive at your destination, make sure to make space for spontaneity. Usually, the most expensive trips are the ones that are overbooked with tours, reservations, shows, and classes. By letting yourself be free to explore, you take advice from locals, spend more time in places that interest you, and save money on tourist traps.

Learning How to Travel on a Budget

Learning how to travel on a budget isn’t as hard as you think. In fact, you probably won’t even feel like you are trying to stay on budget if you do it the right way. If you utilize deals and travel points, book reasonable flights and lodging, and set spending limits, you’ll be able to travel cheaply and smartly.
