66% of the Poor are 30+ Pounds Overweight vs. 21% of the Rich

In my five-year Rich Habits Study, I interviewed 233 wealthy individuals and 128 people living in poverty. One health finding stood out sharply: 66% of the poor were overweight by 30 pounds or more, compared with only 21% of the rich. Among self-made millionaires the rate was even lower.

This gap was not random. It tracked directly with daily habits. In the same research, 76% of the rich exercised aerobically at least 30 minutes a day, four days a week while only about 23% of the poor did.

Nearly all of the poor (97%) consumed more than 300 junk-food calories daily, 69% ate fast food three or more times a week, and 69% ate candy more than twice a week.

The rich limited junk food, prioritized consistent exercise, slept seven or more hours, and treated physical health as non-negotiable.

I have detailed these contrasts in articles on my Rich Habits website, including “Your Daily Habits Show Up in the Mirror” and “18 Habits That Separate the Rich and the Poor.” Media outlets such as Business Insider have reported the exact 66% versus 21% figures, linking poor health habits to what I call “detrimental luck”—more illness, higher medical costs, lower energy, and reduced earning power.

While my study used a specific self-reported measure of being 30 or more pounds overweight, independent national data support the underlying disparity. CDC analyses of NHANES data show adult obesity prevalence around 39–40% in the lowest income groups versus roughly 31% in the highest income groups. Overall, more than 70% of U.S. adults are overweight or obese, with rates consistently higher among those with lower income and less education. County-level research has also found substantially elevated obesity in high-poverty areas compared with wealthier ones.

The lesson from both my research and external evidence is the same: excess weight and financial struggle often reinforce each other. The habits that keep the body lean—daily movement, controlled eating, and disciplined routines—also support the energy and focus required to build wealth.

Changing those habits changes both the mirror and the balance sheet.
