Monday, May 27, 2024, is Memorial Day, which is a federal holiday. For many, the holiday means a day off from work, which can make it look like the perfect time for some trading. However, not everything is open on federal holidays. Typically, banks and the post office close. Some businesses may also choose to close their doors for the end-of-May holiday. If you’re asking, “Is the stock market closed on Memorial Day 2024?” here’s what you need to know.

Is the Stock Market Closed on Memorial Day 2024?

Yes, the stock market is closed on Memorial Day 2024. Both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ use the same holiday schedule, and Memorial Day is a holiday when they close.

If you need to handle trades before Memorial Day, you’ll need to complete them before the end of the trading session on Friday, May 23. Otherwise, the stock markets will reopen on Tuesday, May 28.

Stock Market Holiday Closures 2024

As mentioned above, the NYSE and NASDAQ use the same holiday schedule. While it’s close to the federal holiday schedule, there are a few key differences.

  • Juneteenth – Wednesday, June 19
  • Independence Day – Thursday, July 4
  • Labor Day – Monday, September 2
  • Thanksgiving – Thursday, November 28

The stock market also has some early closures. It closes at 1 p.m. EST on the following days:

  • The Day Before July 4th – Wednesday, July 3
  • Black Friday – Friday, November 29
  • Christmas Eve – Tuesday, December 24

Is the Bond Market (SIMFA) Closed on Memorial Day?

The bond market, also known as SIMFA, is also closed on Memorial Day. Although the SIMFA follows a similar holiday schedule to the NYSE and NASDAQ, there are some key differences. Here is a look at the holidays that the bond market acknowledges:

  • New Year’s Day  – Monday, January 1
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Monday, January 15
  • Washington’s Birthday – Monday, February 19
  • Good Friday – Friday, March 29
  • Memorial Day – Monday, May 27
  • Juneteenth – Wednesday, June 19
  • Independence Day – Thursday, July 4
  • Labor Day – Monday, September 2
  • Columbus Day – Monday, October 14
  • Veterans Day – Monday, November 11
  • Thanksgiving – Thursday, November 28
  • Christmas Day – Wednesday, December 25

SIMFA also closes at 2 p.m. EST several days throughout the year. Here they are:
